History of Garden Spot Farm

Garden Spot Farm has grown into a thriving family business from what began as a passionate gardening hobby for founder and family patriarch, Dennis Peaslee, Sr. Together with his wife, lifelong Pownal resident, Patricia Vosmus, Dennis nurtured a life long fascination with horticulture into a family business.

Youngest son, Dennis Peaslee, Jr., operates the farm now and strives to grow the business each year much as his father did before him.

Peaslee initially began growing vegetables for the family dinner table. He sold his extra produce at a roadside stand, earning local acclaim for his 26 varieties of tomatoes and winning 8 blue ribbons in the 1977 Cumberland Fair. The first metal framed greenhouse went up in 1978 and Garden Spot Farm began to take shape. Originally known for his vegetables, Peaslee expanded into flowering annuals and perennials.

His pansies, particularly, became a local favorite. The most popular spot in Pownal in May was Garden Spot Farm’s pansy greenhouses.

Thousands of blooming pansies produced a visual and fragrant spectacle that drew customers from all regions.

From humble beginnings Garden Spot Farm continues to grow as a thriving business, employing upwards of 15 people during peak season and featuring a retail Garden Center, stocked with essential gardening supplies and accessories.

Garden Spot Farm now carries over 900 varieties of annuals and perennials along with well over 100 varieties of garden vegetables and a nursery bursting with 220 varieties of roses, flowering trees, shade trees and shrubbery.
